Modern Science and Astronomy says that-
Distance of Earth from Sun is 152 million km.
I came across an interesting post on FaceBook regarding this distance calculation and thought to share an elaborate verison of it with you all. It will help you to understand the significance of our ancient principles, technology and culture.
Two lines of Hindu Prayer " Hanuman Chalisa" computes that distance with great simplicity and that too quite accurately -
! जुग सहस्त्र योजन पर भानु, लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू !
This means that Sun (भानु ) is at a distance of Juug Sahastra Yojans (जुग सहस्त्र योजन- Distance Unit in Hindi)
According to following conversion practices that are in use as per Hindu Vedic Literature-
1Juug= 12000
Sahastra= 1000
1Yojan=8 Miles
Thus 12000X1000X8 = 96,000,000 miles
I miles= 1.6 kms
This further implies that distance is about 153,600,000 Km.
Some google research told me that in the 17th century two scientists Giovanni and Richer have calculated the distance of sun from earth accurately and real close( at 140 million kilometers) to now officially declared figures.
Hanuman Chalisa has been validated by Goswami Tulsidas who is believed to be of 15th Century. This means distance of Sun from Earth has been calculated much more accurately than these 17th century scientists even two centuries before their birth.
Question here is not how Tulsidas calculated this distance or how he came to know about this distance.
But the attention of the moment should be on that people even in that age have knowledge and capabilities that is beyond the imagination of our so called todays advanced nuclear energy age.
History is not presented to us in a way it should be. There are still many elements and precious jewels of information that are being kept hidden from us.
Ocean of history is before you, dive in and dig the jewels out.The gleaming beam of knowledge from these jewels will not only enrich our country but will also keep bestowing direction to our future generations.
Yug is unit of time, not distance. The calculation is not even wrong, it is non-sensical.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your valuable feedback....you are absolutely correct that yug is unit of time....
DeleteBut people of those times often use reference units to convey their thoughts and vision .....like hands and knots were used to convey distance and time in ancient times once......
look at the views of the poets eye not an engineer's point of view..
DeleteFriends,
DeleteFirstly we have to understand that it is a poetic composition and to maintain the flow and rhythm Goswami Tulsidas has used these words - from the use of these words we can interpret the meaning. Our languages are such that there are no defined words, but words are created from properties of objects. E.g. in Sanskrit there is a word Vriksh whose English word is Tree and it is defined. But Vriksh word is actually the property of a tree which means "something that can be cut and fell down" . So, even a log of wood can be called as Vriksh in Sanskrit. And similarly a Tree can have 10 different names based on its properties, and still anyone who has seen a Tree can read and understand that the author is describing a tree..!! Amazing language.
If an English poet uses word Dozen instead of Twelve, the reader will still understand what author has written. Similarly when Goswami Tulsidas used the words "Jug Sahastra Jojan" he clearly meant 96,000,000 miles.
Otherwise if those words did not mean distance, then in what context are they written? So, they surely mean distance between Sun and Earth.
Here juug is not even a unit. It is the prefix for a number which is shown to be 12000. So don't underestimate the ancient people. They hid so much of their knowledge in their verses so that it doesn't go into wrong hands.
DeleteOldest language is Sanskrit according to Sanskrit paraardha was the last number of calculation 100000000000000000 which mean today's is last number of trillions but before 7000 BCE we were so scientific person because Ramayana written in Sanskrit please read Vedas ,upneshed , Ramayana we have great science book .

DeleteIn addition to Nilesh's view the other point is that the Yug is defined in divine years and not human years. The scriptures says that one divine year is equal to 360 human years hence the yug should be taken as 432000 in this calculation. So if you consider this the non-accuracy will shoot through sky. Plus the yojan is not properly defined. It is measured anywhere from 4.8 to 8 miles.
ReplyDeleteSo the conclusion is that it is a fabricated piece of knowledge which is not even wrong mathematically but is absurd as well.
I have never said that it is divine year or human year....it's just a way of interpretation....
DeleteAs I have said it is the reference of units that is basics of all the counting and measuring systems of even modern times...make a reference and you can invent new unit...
People in ancient times have great wisdom and there is no doubt in the wisdom of Saint tulsidas....we have to be open minded enough to understand such wisdom from great personalities of our country.....
It's similar like defining Nostradamus quatrains in a firm way when they can be different in meanings from what you might have thought.
I agree with u ashish tht the description my vary but the the truth cant. Those people definitely had a better system,or very more advanced is wht i feel. It is just tht we still have to discover a lot more things tht our ancestors have left for us. Also some may all this things are myth but actually we should consider these things as history.

Sometimes some inferences comes out and realized purely out of experience.. No matter how hard you tried some processes takes their own natural time to bloom out...
ReplyDeleteSimilarly wisdom of great personalities is the result of not only hard work but continuous hard work, dedication and penance over a period of time which gives them an understanding of phenomenon beyond the definition of modern science...
Dear Nilesh and Subhash,
ReplyDeleteI respect your views as I am also an ardent Engineer. But since when I have started looking into Technology in ancient India, I am astonished by the facts mentioned in out Ancient Texts. Unfortunately, I am not a Sanskrit scholar and I am going through the translations made by various western and Indian intellectuals.
here, we have to understand that in our ancient numbering system they have mentioned everything in the form of Mantras and Rhyms and verses. So its difficult to decode many things and it may lead to to some confusions as the meanings can come out to be twisted. But regarding the numeric systems THEY HAVE USED SOME WORD TO REPRESENT NUMBERS SUCH AS - MOON = SUN = 1, MAHABHUTAS=5, TAPA=12 ETC. ACCORDINGLY, YUGA =12000 AS PLAIN NUMBER IN CONTEXT WITH NUMBER. sO PLS DONT MIX THIS WITH TIME MEASUREMNT. I AGREE THAT THE 'YOJANA' COULD LEAD TO CONFUSIONS BUT PLEASE LOOK AT THE FACT THAT THE RATIO OF THE DISTANCES BETWEEEN THE SUN AND MOON AND THEIR DIAMETERS ARE MENTIONED IN 1ST MILLENIUM B.C.TEXTS TO BE EQUAL TO 108, IS AMAZINGLY ACCURATE TO 99% ACCORDING TO MODERN DAY SCIENCE. IS THIS NOT SURPRISING? DO YOU THINK THIS IS MANIPULATED OR A MARE CO INCIDANCE? IT CAN NOT BE. MANY OF THE LITERATURE IS MISSING AND HAS GONE BEHIND THE MEMRIES BEFORE IT WAS CONVERTED INTO TEXTS DURING ANCIANT TIMES. IF YOU LOOK AT THE TEMPLES BUILT FRIM 3RD TO 10TH CENTURIES C.E., THEY ARE AMAZINGLY BUILT TO SOME PRECISION WHILE CARVING AND MAKING. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BUILT THEM WITHOUT A FINE METHOD OF MEASUREMENT AND PROPER ENGINEERING DRAWINGS. A LOT OF RESEARCH NEEDS TO BE DONE ON THIS SUBJECT THAT REJECTING THEM OUTRIGHTLY. UNFORTUNATELY IT IS NOT HAPPENING.
i agree with mr. joshi. As an engineer i was astonished too.
DeleteThe ratio of distance from sun to moon is about 390 and the ratio of their diameters is about 370. If you don't believe me, search these parameters, use a calculator and find out for yourself. I'm not saying you are wrong. But I would like to see your source.
DeletePerfectly right mr. Joshi
ReplyDeletewhy it is multiplied by 8
ReplyDeletethanks satish for pointing out the error...Actually one yojan is equal to approx. 8 miles..that is why it is multiplied by 8 in the end...
DeleteA yuga is always equal to 24000 years instead of 12000 mentioned here and the value of yojan always varied between 3 to 5 miles and was taken as 4, hence making the calculation as 24000 X 1000 X 4 = 96,000,000 miles.
ReplyDeleteSatya yuga, dwabara yuga, thretha yuga and Kaliyuga, each yuga has different number of years. so one cannot accurately calculate how many years for the yuga. The number of years for each yuga has been provided in Srimath Bhagavatam
ReplyDeleteSome google research told me that in the 17th century two scientists Giovanni and Richer have calculated the distance of sun from earth accurately and real close( at 140 million kilometers) to now officially declared figures. distance calculator USA
ReplyDeleteYojana is 8 miles. Miles?! Isn't that a unit used only by the Americans. Now what is this connection between ancient India and America?
ReplyDeleteGreat information and conversation. Thank you all. Read hanuman chalisa regularly.
ReplyDeleteNice article. Its quite amazing to know that there are so many facts that many are not aware about Hinduism. This fact is a perfect example. Hardly many are aware that our ancestors were so advanced in astronomy that they could exactly calculate the distance between the Earth and the Sun.
